History and Rules

Phoenix Angling Club has been in existence since 1982 and was started by Bill Knight and other anglers of a like mind.  The Club originally had no water of it's own and members fished at free waters.  The first water under the control of the Club was Stevington, followed by Stafford Bridge and then finally the Pig Farm/East End Farm areas.  Committee meetings, the AGM and other social events were held at the Phoenix Public House in Bedford, which has now sadly closed down.

The Club was particularly well known in the 1990s when the River Great Ouse was legendary for its barbel fishing. Whilst there are still some barbel to be found in the Club waters, their numbers have declined throughout the Great Ouse and it's tributaries due to changes in the ecosystem caused by a variety of factors.

In more recent times the river has re-established itself as a premier coarse fishery that holds a good number and variety of coarse fish with good sized chub, perch and pike all possible along with good bags of silver fish.

Please find below the Club Rules.

New to fishing or need some help?

We firmly believe that spending time fishing in the great outdoors offers huge mental health and wellbeing benefits.

We also recognise that for those new to the sport, getting the right equipment and building the necessary skills can seem a bit daunting.

Therefore, we are committed to helping people of any age or background to start fishing, and to get as much enjoyment from it as we do!

At Phoenix Angling Club we have two qualified Angling Trust Coaches who would be happy to advise anyone thinking of taking up fishing (contact phoenixaccoaching@gmail.com). We also run taster/junior events in the summer months – details of these are advertised on our Facebook page.

We look forward to hearing from you!
